The word 'enlightenment' can be used to refer to many different concepts. The phrase 'The Enlightenment' refers to a philosophical revolution of the 18th century based on rationalism. In a secular or a non-Buddhist context the word is often used meaning full comprehension of a situation, or having gained spiritual insight. Enlightenment is also used as a translation of the word Bodhi and thus is construed as being the opposite of Saṃsāra and thus means a state of freedom from suffering, desire and ignorance. Many scientists believe that at the moment of the subjective experience of enlightenment there is an actual physical change in the brain, as detailed in Eugene G. d'Aquili's The Mystical Mind: Probing the Biology of Religious Experience. I think there are many reasons that people turn to chemical enlightenment. Some of the big one though is that some are searching for something to fix something in their life that is off-kilter. I also think that some people are so sensitive and their brain gets overloaded so easily they use it as an escape route... to dull their reality. Secular law tries to control it; they do the best they can with the resources they have. I think many people relapse or don't become desensitized to it (i don't think if you are an addict you are ever truly cured of the chemical addiction) because just fixing the chemical dependency doesn't cut the mustard. If the underlying issues which made the person feel like they had to turn to drugs aren't dealt… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Thu Jun 29 19:26:50 2006 Spiritual enlightenment?
Q. When I was 17, I got my first severe episode of derealization. the world seemed "different"-- as in BAD. Everything before that point had seemed like a lie. I wasn't even sure the exact moment was really happening. I was afraid of reality and completely confused. Panic attacks and all. I've read some books and they explain spiritual enlightenment as dropping the unreal, or becoming one with true reality .Well, when I have those episodes, I feel in my heart that it is true reality reaching out for me, and I'm just too afraid of it to grab it. I feel like I'm avoiding a good opportunity that many people never attain, just because it's too scary for me. I don't know what is so scary about it, but it is definitely the most frightening feeling… [cont.] Asked by ... - Wed Jul 8 21:54:40 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It certainly doesn't sound spiritual. Rather it sounds like you are experiencing frequent panic attacks and worrying about future ones. I'm NOT a doctor but I would say that you may have what is termed panic disorder. There is no clear understanding of the cause - twin studies indicate it may be partially genetic while other studies point to triggers such as stress or drugs. Its purely anecdotal, but I have seen pot cause paranoia in some people. Note that there are effective treatments for this. I would read through the Mayo Clinic pages on it and, if it fits, consult a health care professional.
