Prayer is a form of religious practice that seeks to activate a volitional connection to God, or any deity, through deliberate practice. Prayer may be either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words or song. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creedal statement, or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person. There are different forms of prayer such as petitionary prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and worship/praise. Prayer may be directed towards a deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshiping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing sins or to express one's thoughts and emotions. Thus, people pray for many reasons such as personal benefit or for the sake of others.

Most major religions involve prayer in one way or another. Some ritualize the act of prayer, requiring a strict sequence of actions or placing a restriction on who is permitted to pray, while others teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any time.

Scientific studies regarding the use of prayer have mostly concentrated on its effect on the healing of sick or injured people. The efficacy of petition in prayer for physical healing to a deity has been evaluated in numerous studies, with contradictory results. There has been some criticism of the way the studies were conducted.

A. Well, in my case my daughters figured they didn't need to worry about it. Even if God didn't want me, Satan would be afraid to take me, so it wasn't likely I would die. \\\

A. According to the bible, there is none. Matthew 6:7 / And when praying, do not use needless repetitions as the Gentiles do, for they expect to be listened to because of their multitude of words. Luke 11:1-4 / 1 It happened, that when he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples." 2 He said to them, "When you pray, say, 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come. May your will be done on Earth, as it is in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'"

Why does prayer work better for athletes than it does for ordinary folk who are dying of starvation?
Q. I ask because I've noticed a lot of football players thanking God for their touchdowns lately. Haven't seen many people with distended bellies and flies swirling around their eyes doing the same. Maybe it's the liberal media's fault for slanting the issue of prayer and not covering the entire story. Your input is always welcome, and, as always, if/when you receive a thumbs up or down - it wasn't me. Thanks for answering.

A. It doesn't. Example: 10 people are in a race. All are of the same religion, and pray to win. How many prayers will be answered? (I know, some people say "it was answered, but not the way you wanted...". This is a cop out. It means "prayer is pointless". Ya know, since god does what he wants anyhow)>

Prayer is the act of attempting to communicate, commonly with a sequence of words, with a deity or spirit for the purpose of worshipping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing sins, as an act of reparation or to express one's thoughts and emotions. The words of the prayer may take the form of intercession, a hymn, incantation or a spontaneous utterance in the person's praying words. Secularly, the term can also be used in referring too "hope".
