Are jews allowed to drink beer or vodka on shabbat?
Q. I know for the shabbat rituals that you use wine but just during the time between sundown fri. and sundown sat. can you drink any grain alcohol?

A. You can't use beer or vodka for kiddush unless no wine is available. Other than that, you are allowed to drink hard alcohol on the Sabbath. You shouldn't drink to get drunk, though. While there are a couple of Jewish holidays that encourage drinking (Purim, where it is a mitzvah to get drunk to a certain amount, and Simchat Torah, where drinking as part of celebrating is seen as acceptable), the Sabbath isn't one of them. So if it enhances your Sabbath experience, go for it. If it makes the Sabbath the same as any other party night for you, then it's not a good idea. Many religious Jews (and some Orthodox synagogues) actually bring out a bottle of single-malt scotch or other aged whiskey, or a selection of schnapps, that are… [cont.]
