The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist and Oxford University professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II. Although known to many readers as a trilogy, the work was initially intended by Tolkien to be one volume of a two-volume set along with The Silmarillion; however, the publisher decided to omit the second volume and instead published The Lord of the Rings in 1954–55 as three volumes containing a total of six books, rather than one, for economic reasons. It has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages, becoming one of the most popular and influential works in 20th-century literature.

The title of the book refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power, as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across Middle-earth following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, most notably the hobbits, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee (Sam), Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) and Peregrin Took (Pippin), but also the hobbits' chief helpers: Aragorn, a ranger, and Gandalf, a wizard.

Along with some of Tolkien's other works, The Lord of the Rings has been subjected to extensive analysis of its themes and origins. Although a major work in itself, the story was only the last movement of a larger work Tolkien had worked on since 1917, in a process he described as mythopoeia. Influences on this earlier work, and on the story of The Lord of the Rings, include philology, mythology, religion and the author's distaste for the effects of industrialization, as well as earlier fantasy works and Tolkien's experiences in World War I. The Lord of the Rings in its turn is considered to have had a great effect on modern fantasy; the impact of Tolkien's works is such that the use of the words "Tolkienian" and "Tolkienesque" has been recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary.

The enduring popularity of The Lord of the Rings has led to numerous references in popular culture, the founding of many societies by fans of Tolkien's works, and the publication of many books about Tolkien and his works. The Lord of the Rings has inspired, and continues to inspire, artwork, music, films and television, video games, and subsequent literature. Award-winning adaptations of The Lord of the Rings have been made for radio, theatre, and film.

Which was more interesting to read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings trilogy?
Q. I am a huge fan of The Lord of Rings films, so I decided to read the books. But the poblem is is that I'm not a fan of reading, so the book has to be interesting for me to be able to read it. So what was better The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings (or one of the LORT books)?

A. It really depends on what you will enjoy more - a wonderful book for children or a more serious trilogy. Hobbit is fun, for me it is something like Alice in Wonderland and you just don't want it to end. However, Hobbit should not be underestimated as it offers a great deal food for thought. The Lord of the Rings is really serious, I mean, when I read it at twelve years old I didn't understand it well. If you seek something deeper and to which you will go back often when you have finished, you should read LOTR. The Lord of the Rings is also abundant in descriptions of places and nature - it can become exasperating at times. There are also many things to remember as you advance through the book. You should also have more freetime for… [cont.]

A. The Fellowship of the Ring The Two Towers Return of the King Just a bit of a note that this series should really be considered "one movie" and by that I mean that there is no neat end at the end of each film. So most movies there is a single story per movie with a beginning a middle and the end. And then any sequels may further a story but each movie is an entity that can almost stand on it's own - so Men in Black or Sex in the City. With these movies, The Fellowship is like the beginning, The Two Towers is the middle and Return of the King is the ending...

Why should one read "Lord of Rings"?
Q. The movie has already been made, so one already knows the story... The books are very very long, so one could be discouraged by reading it... Still I feel curious about the story and would like to read it. It's a genre I've never read before though... Are you able to give me at least 3 good reasons of why I should read it? Grazie :-)

A. To the guy who said he read ROTK and thought it was bad...that's not how you do. For people used to lighter reading, you have to start with book one, and get caught into it.You won't like it...as much if you do it peice-meal like that. #1 you can't judge a book by its movie. No you don't know the story, lol! There are SOOO many diferences!!! the biggest...um...it was actually 17 years from Bilbo's b-day party to the day Frodo left. Pippin was 12, Merry 20-30, and Sam about 33 at the begining of the trilogy. #2 It's much better then the movie. They left out so many hilarious lines! #3 I was dicouraged before I hit the first page. Less discouraged. 1st chapter. Not really discourages. By the end of the first 3-4 chapters I was well into… [cont.]

This is a portal page for quotes from the three standard volumes of the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien; they contain some "spoilers". For quotations from the movie adaptations, go to the page for The Lord of the Rings movies.

The following four titles are links to separate pages of quotes from each of the three volumes, and the appendices:

Books I and II - The Fellowship of the Ring
Books III and IV - The Two Towers
Books V and VI - The Return of the King
Appendices to The Lord of the Rings
