A newspaper is a regularly scheduled publication containing news, information, and advertising. By 2007 there were 6580 daily newspapers in the world (including 1456 in the U.S.) selling 395 million copies a day (55 million in the U.S). The worldwide recession of 2008, combined with the rapid growth of web-based alternatives, caused a serious decline in advertising and circulation, as many papers closed or sharply retrenched operations.

General-interest newspapers typically publish stories on local and national political events and personalities, crime, business, entertainment, society and sports. Most traditional papers also feature an editorial page containing editorials written by an editor and columns that express the personal opinions of writers. Other features include display and classified advertising, comics, and inserts from local merchants.

The newspaper is typically funded by paid subscriptions and advertising.

A wide variety of material has been published in newspapers, including editorial opinions, criticism, persuasion and op-eds; obituaries; entertainment features such as crosswords, sudoku and horoscopes; weather news and forecasts; advice, food and other columns; reviews of movies, plays and restaurants; classified ads; display ads, editorial cartoons and comic strips.

Definition

Newspapers typically meet four criteria:

  • Publicity: Its contents are reasonably accessible to the public.
  • Periodicity: It is published at regular intervals.
  • Currency: Its information is up to date.
  • Universality: It covers a range of topics.

What metric should an online newspaper publisher use to sell ads to advertisers?
Q. For an online newspaper publisher, what other metric (beside unique visitors) about the newspaper website can they use to successfully selling clients (advertisers) advertising? Note: (They are not using unique visitors since the number is underreported by web analyzer software-- ex: 2 millions visitors instead of 3.5 millions visitors -- since many readers use work computers that do not allow cookie or other tracking software to be installed. The underreported number of visitors will cause them to lose clients to other online newspaper sites who have over-reported number of visitors)

A. Any reputable site allows a 3rd party ad server like DoubleClick or Atlas to serve ads. This removes the question of reporting because the ads are counted when served. It doesn't matter if a user allows cookies or not.

What is the future of the conventional, daily printed newspaper?
Q. Will we still be reading actual, printed newspapers in the future? My guess is that they will be around for sometime yet, but when we master certain technologies that allow people to read anything, anywhere, in any physical position, at any level of light, then the days of the newspaper as we know it could be numbered. And this technology might not be too far away. What do you think?

A. I definitely don't read printed papers. I read all the news online. I like certain sources for world news, certain sources for US news, certain ones for lifestyle articles, etc. You can't get that from one printed paper. And they're cumbersome. And you can't get up-to the minute updates. And you can't press a button to share it with your friends across the country. And they feel dirty. Not to mention the waste of trees. I don't know why anyone reads them.
