What is the purpose of a prayer box on your dorm room door?
Q. Last semester, on my floor, one prayer box popped up, followed by another a couple doors down. Each has paper and a pen next to it. I understand at a church, or even the religious building(s) on campus. I also understand putting prayers or bible verses on your door. But why ask other people to write prayers and put their names on them and give them to you, a layperson? What is going on here? If no one knows, how do I ask tactfully? I doubt it's for a class - no class lasts both semesters. And this week, one of the girls put up a notice saying that if you took her pen or paper, you'd be struck by lightning, as God was watching.

A. I'm not in college, and I didn't do this while in college, but I have often asked people if they have any names for the prayer roll. Perhaps this is a way these people are doing that. I am a layperson, but what I do, is take the names to the "official" prayer roll and put them on it. Then I tell the person that I have done so. Or perhaps, in a completely different vein of looking at this. Perhaps the persons who did this were doing it as part of a class assignment for a religion class. EDIT: Maybe they are just going through a particularly religious phase. I did when I was in college, as did one of my next door neighbors in the last dorm I was in. I actually changed religions in college. Perhaps you could ask one of them. Maybe… [cont.]

Q. i mean if ramadan this year will be on 22 august which is saturday , then the first taraweeh prayer will be on the 21 which is friday ?( the night that is before first day of ramadan ) or 22 after having our breakfast ?

A. Praise be to Allaah. It is prescribed for the Muslim to perform Taraaweeh prayer after Isha on the first night of Ramadaan, which is the night on which the new moon is sighted or the Muslims complete thirty days of Sha baan. Similarly at the end of Ramadaan, Taraaweeh prayer should not be offered if it is proven that the month has ended, either by sighting of the new moon of Eid or if the month of thirty days has been completed. It is clear that Taraaweeh prayer is not connected to the fast during the day in Ramadaan, rather it is connected to the onset of the month at night in the beginning, and the last day of Ramadaan at the end. We should not say that Taraaweeh prayer is a naafil prayer and it is permissible to offer it on… [cont.]

What prayer should I pray before I go to sleep?
Q. I am trying to get in the habit of praying before I go to sleep but I find I don't know what prayer if any I should say. I usually first ask God for forgiveness (for all my sins), to watch over me, my family and friend and to take away my burdens, after that I usually find my self rambling or talking to God about stupid things... Is there a structured Christian prayer I should pray? Something from the Bible I could start off with maybe?

A. I personally think the best prayers are personal ones. When I taught my children how to pray we would always kneel at their bedside they would: 1) Address their Heavenly Father (Dear Heavenly Father) 2) Give thanks (acknowledge all your blessings and all you are grateful for at His hand) 3) Request help/express needs/concerns/worries/pr oblems (express from your heart) 4) pray for others 5) acknowledge sins and pray for forgiveness 6) misc (anything else you need to share with Him - He is your Heavenly Father - He loves you - He wants to hear from you!) 7) Close in the name of Jesus Christ - Amen That is a basic format for personal prayer and beats a wrote repeated prayer anytime in my book! And if you can pray privately and out loud… [cont.]

Why did BO stay home on the National Prayer Day, but was the keynote speaker for Hispanic prayer day?
Q. Obama himself said prayers are supposed to be private matters. On the National Day of Prayer, he didn't allow any church leaders in the White House and was caught playing basketball. However, today he was the keynote speaker with full media coverage at the National Hispanic Prayer breakfast. While at the prayer breakfast this morning he also said we should give full citizenship rights to illegals. Dems are such hypocrites.

A. As so many other responders have pointed out, Obama is courting the Hispanic vote and he doesn't give a rat's ass about offending Christians! If you follow the Obama progression, he panders to minority groups and Muslims and estranges Christians. That is where he imagines his power is based. Now if that doesn't give you pause, nothing will! By the way, hypocrites are only labeled hypocrites when exposed, and does anyone seriously believe the Omedia will ever hold Obama's feet to the fire!

How to overcome stubbornness and indifference in my daily prayer life?
Q. How can I overcome these feelings of indifference or stubbornness to submit to the Lord in prayer? I sometimes (not always) don't want to get into prayer with the Lord. I feel like it's wrong, but I can't help it. Sometimes I just don't want to be bothered. I want to go to the Lord with a clean heart, the way that I should, but I find it extremely difficult to submit myself to Him completely. What should I do?

A. Hi sis, prayer is simply talking to Jesus - no need to get into a religious mood to talk to Him. :) He is with you 24 hours a day, seven days a week - He abides with you forever. He has already given you a clean heart because you are a new creation - His laws are written on your heart and mind, and He remembers your sins no more. (Hebrews 8:8-12) We christians are blessed to be living in the new covenant of grace. King David had to pray for God to create in him a clean heart because he was under the old covenant of law. (Psalm 51:10) But in the new covenant, God has replaced our old heart of stone with a new heart of flesh, the moment we believed in Jesus. :) (Ezekiel 36:26-28) Your part is simply to rest in Jesus' finished work at the… [cont.]

What is the difference between the law of attraction and prayer?
Q. That both seem to serve the same purpose. Is there a difference? The reason I ask is that if you think of something, or visualize something that you want, whether it be some object, and experience or and outcome; and you have faith that it will become, then isn't that the same energy as prayer? So, wouldn't that make prayer simply another concept of law of attraction? Are they both simply the power of the mind? Because I seem get the same results from both. Now that definitely changes the whole landscape, doesn't it? If we have the power to attract simply by the power of thought and imagination, then what does that say about prayer?

Q. You do realize that your kids are free to pray in class anytime they wish, right? And that the only thing removed from schools is the educators are not permitted to lead such a prayer. A. I can volunteer at any school, I can pray when in that school...I can not engage the children and force them to pray with me. I have no problem with the rules... my children were taught that they could stop drop and pray anywhere they wanted...including school but they were told they could never ever ever force another child to join them, or try to make another student believe what they believed.

Q. Is the Lord's Prayer a prayer we are supposed to memorize and recite?

A. Jesus gave us the Lord's (or model) prayer as a guide for proper prayer. We are not to recite it by rote. Jesus is teaching us to pray (1) for the most important issue - the sanctification of his father's name jehovah (2) for God's KINGDOM to come (Daniel 2:44) which will put an end to all of earth's wickedness (3) then to ask for our needs to be given (4) for forgiveness of our sins and shortcomings (5) for protection from wickedness

A. I'd say there should be a moment of silence in school that you can do whatever you want with. If you have an actual prayer time I believe that to be a violation of the Constitution, and even as a Christian I wouldn't want that because there are laws, and the laws should be followed. Having a moment of silence though, that COULD be dedicated to prayer if you're so inclined, or COULD be dedicated to thinking if you're not religious is fine with me. It doesn't impede anyone's worship, and it doesn't force religion on anyone. That's a good middle of the road imo.

A. I have had the same prayer plant for many years. In the late winter and early spring it gets little white flowers. Generally about this time there will be new growth coming from the center of the plant. I cut of all the old growth at this time. Sometimes the leaves look pretty healthy that I cut off so one time I decided to try to root them in water. Wa la it worked! I did not have sucess with every leaf but have propagated a few plants this way. Mine has been in the same pot for a while with just regular potting soil. I usually take a fork and stir up the top soil (about an inch down) to prevent the soil from compacting. I do this with all my plants before watering them. Maybe try adding some vermiculite to the soil when you transplant… [cont.]

Is Rick Warren giving the prayer at the inauguration really a problem?
Q. Why is there so much controversy with this? So what if he mentions God or Jesus in the prayer? The freedom of religion is not freedom from religion, it is the right to practice your religion without persecution, and the right to not believe in other religions. I just don't see the big deal, we all have the right to be offended but not the right to interfere with someone elses rights as long as that practice is legal and not harming others. So would it be wrong if he was Jewish and had a Rabbi do the prayer? Again, just don't see the big problem.

A. The protesting of Warren is BS. This is the US, not Saudi Arabia. We celebrate Christmas here. We use the calendar system "AD" which mean after death of Christ. Obama is a Christian, and he wanted a Christian pastor to pray. Warren is a logical choice for Obama.

Asked by calculusde - Sun Feb 8 19:31:16 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Before a meal, we recite 'Allahumma bariklana feema razaktana warzukhna khairan minhu. bismillahi wa'ala barakatillahi' Meaning: O Allah, bless it(the food) for us and feed us better than it.I begin in the Name of Allah with the Blessings of Allah' I was taught this prayer by our mentor when I was 4 years old. ymoham3 and Moez are right too. 'Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim' which means "In the name of God, most Gracious, most Compassionate" Muslims often utter this phrase before they set out to do anything. After a meal: 'Alhamdulillahi Rahman nir Rahim.' Meaning: ' All praise to God, the most merciful and compassionate.'
