From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Religion (from O.Fr. religion "religious community," from L. religionem (nom. religio) "respect for what is sacred, reverence for the gods," "obligation, the bond between man and the gods" is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or more in general a set of beliefs explaining the existence of and giving meaning to the universe, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. Aspects of religion include narrative, symbolism, beliefs, and practices that are supposed to give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life. Whether the meaning centers on a deity or deities, or an ultimate truth, religion is commonly identified by the practitioner's prayer, ritual, meditation, music and art, among other things, and is often interwoven with society and politics. It may focus on specific supernatural, metaphysical, and moral claims about reality (the cosmos and human nature) which may yield a set of religious laws and ethics and a particular lifestyle. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and religious experience. The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures, with continental differences. The term "religion" refers both to the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system", but it is more socially defined than personal convictions, and it entails specific behaviors, respectively. Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, tradition, rituals, and scriptures are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion is also often described as a "way of life" or a life stance. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Currently I am applying to a few religious private colleges. I understand they lean towards certain religious backgrounds. The one I am doing at this very moment is a Catholic private college. I was raised Baptist but have been a practicing Buddhist for several years. Will putting down Baptist make my chances any better for a Catholic school? Besides the religious aspect, my GPA and test scores are much higher than the college's standards. I just don't want my religion to screw it all up. Asked by a girl with a question - Sun Oct 4 10:12:52 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Catholic schools pretty much divide the religious affiliations of applicants into "Catholic" and "non-Catholic." How much of a difference that makes to them depends on how strictly Catholic they are; someplace like Georgetown won't care that much, while somewhere like Boston College might. Either follow your conscience or leave it blank. Answered by MM - Sun Oct 4 11:51:04 2009 What is the worst religious event in American History? Q. I can think of a bunch for Europe, the crusades, the 30 years war, the witchcraft trials which killed thousands, the religious wars after the Protestant reformation. For America the worst thing I can think of is the witchcraft scare at Salem, and the deaths of all of 20 people. I've always thought that this was a major reason why America is so much more religious then Europe. Asked by James R - Wed Dec 3 23:14:52 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Q. Whenever I encounter a religious person, I m always thinking things like, How insane is this person? Does this person have explosives strapped to their body? Is this person about to evangelize to me about some primitive belief system? Is this person a member of some weird new cult and is about to try to manipulate me into joining it? Is there a way to quickly and accurately determine how crazy and potentially dangerous a religious person is that you ve just met, because in my experience, all religious people are crazy and potentially dangerous to some degree?
